Some Interesting Facts
about N.Y.
Posted by Hank on October 10,
1997 Did you noticed that Tashkent
and New York City are
almost on the same geographical lattitude :
New York: 40-30'
Tashkent: 41-30'
Mean Temp. in NY: JAN=+1 deg. Celcius
July=+23 deg.Celcius
in Tashkent: Jan= -2 deg. Celcius
July= +27 deg celcius
Despite the fact that NYCity is located
at the Atlantic
Ocean, there is little moderating factor on
temperatures in winter time from the Ocean due to
prevailing west winds and a cold Labrador Current in
the Ocean itself.
Summer temps. in New York are moderated
by the Ocean.
Due to low hight of an Appalachian Mountain System,
there is no protection from cold westerly Canadian
winds in winter time.
Tashkent being far from any large body
of water can
have a wide range of temps. in winter time.
In one winter day temps can rise and fall by almost 25
deg. Celcius
Summers do need explanations - they are
plain Hot &
Dry.
Living in Princeton , 70 miles
south-west of NYC (USDA
Zone 6-7) I was able to grow in my backyard Southern
Magnolia, black and golden bamboo, different types of
Cypress trees.. while when I tried once to plant some
Cypress trees in Tashkent - they did not survive winter
temps.
But there is an interesting place in
Turkmenistan,
behind Koped-Dag Mountains, called Atrek.
When I was there I was stunned by tropical look and
nature of it. There are Date Palms, Lemon & Orange
groves, shugar cane etc. It looks like an oasis in
Saudi Arabia.
About Tbilisi

I want to say several
words about my native town Tbilisi too.
(In comparison with New York City)
It's geographical lattitude:
NYC - 40-30'
Tbilisi - 41-30'
Mean Temp
NYC - January +1, July +23 Cel. deg.
Tbilisi - January +1, July +24
And several words about my country
Georgia (Gruzija):
According to Georgian legend, when God waz distributing
land among the peoples, the Georgian were so busy eating
and drinking (in advantage) that they lost their place
in the queue, and there was no any land for them. So
God was "forced" to give them the choicest bits
of land
he had been saving for himself. And it's really so.
Sorry for long message and your lost
time.
